CJP Clears the Air on Extension Rumors

Islamabad, September 9, 2024-Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has unequivocally refused to accept any extension to his tenure. Speaking during an informal conversation with journalists at the start of the new judicial year, the CJP made it clear that he would not entertain any such offer.

When asked about Rana Sanaullah’s recent remarks suggesting that if the retirement age of all judges was extended, the Chief Justice might agree to an extension, CJP Isa responded, “Bring Rana Sanaullah in front of me. There was a meeting attended by Azam Nazir Tarar, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, and the Attorney General. Rana Sanaullah was not present. In that meeting, it was proposed to extend the tenure of all Chief Justices. I said they could extend others’ terms, but I will not accept it.”

He further remarked, “I don’t even know if I will be alive tomorrow.”

It is worth noting that Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazir Tarar has previously stated that CJP Qazi Faez Isa does not wish to seek an extension, and any claims suggesting otherwise are baseless and unnecessary.
