Islamabad, September 15, 2024– Following a series of high-level meetings in Islamabad on Sunday, centered around the residence of JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the much-anticipated National Assembly and Senate sessions regarding a controversial ‘constitutional package’ convened just before midnight, only to be immediately adjourned until the following day.

Both sessions, originally scheduled earlier in the day, faced multiple delays as members of the government and opposition engaged in crucial discussions. The proposed package includes a significant provision to limit the tenure of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) to three years, among other reforms.

The National Assembly session, initially set for 11:30 a.m., was rescheduled to 4:00 p.m. at the request of a Special Parliamentary Committee. However, even this revised time could not be adhered to as talks between the government and various political factions persisted. The session finally commenced shortly after 11:00 p.m. but was adjourned until Monday at 12:30 p.m.

Similarly, the Senate session, initially planned for 4:00 p.m., was pushed to 7:00 p.m., then further delayed to 10:00 p.m. It ultimately began after 11:00 p.m. but was also adjourned to reconvene on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
