Peshawar, June 3, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday announced the formation of a high-level committee to reassess Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. The announcement came during his address to a Jirga of tribal elders and community leaders in Peshawar.

Paying tribute to the people of KP, the prime minister praised their historic role in the 1947 referendum, describing their support as a testament to their unwavering commitment to Pakistan’s creation and unity. “KP is a land of brave and honorable people,” he said, adding that the province holds a unique place in Pakistan’s cultural and strategic fabric.

The event was attended by Field Marshal Asim Munir, federal ministers, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and members of the provincial cabinet.

In a pointed reference to recent hostilities, Prime Minister Shehbaz revealed that India had launched a surprise attack, with Field Marshal Munir alerting him at 2:30 a.m. He lauded the armed forces’ swift and resolute response, stating, “India has learned a lesson it will not forget.”

He claimed that friendly countries had welcomed Pakistan’s military response, crediting the prayers of the nation for the victory. The prime minister also condemned India’s threats to suspend water supplies, warning that any further provocation would be met with a “firm and unforgettable response.”

“India suffered a humiliating defeat,” he said, accusing Prime Minister Modi of “licking his wounds” and vowing that Pakistan’s retaliatory actions would be remembered.

Turning to domestic issues, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed his government’s commitment to KP’s development and security, particularly in the fight against terrorism. He announced that federal funding for the province would continue until terrorism is fully eradicated, and stressed the importance of modernizing the KP police force.

He noted that over Rs70 billion had been allocated to KP in different phases, with special emphasis on counter-terrorism initiatives. Recalling the 2010 NFC Award, he mentioned that the first agenda item had been KP’s counter-terrorism needs, leading to a unanimous agreement among provinces to allocate 1% of divisible resources for that purpose.
