Washington, August 21, 2025: Judge Frank Caprio, the longtime Chief Judge of Providence Municipal Court whose compassionate courtroom manner turned him into a television and internet star, has died at the age of 88 after battling pancreatic cancer, his family confirmed.

Caprio passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20. “In his honour, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world – just as he did every day,” his family said in a statement.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at half-mast, calling Caprio “a Rhode Island treasure” who exemplified “justice with humanity.”

Caprio rose to national fame through the reality series Caught in Providence, which showcased his mix of empathy, humour, and fairness in handling minor traffic violations. The show aired locally for more than two decades before gaining a national audience, and later went viral worldwide through YouTube, where clips of his rulings attracted millions of viewers.

Known as “America’s Nicest Judge,” Caprio often said: “I don’t wear a badge under my robe. I wear a heart.”

Earlier this year, he released his memoir, Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge.

Caprio revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, sharing updates with his 1.7 million Instagram followers throughout his treatment. His candour, warmth, and resilience earned him admiration far beyond Rhode Island.

He is remembered as a jurist who brought kindness, dignity, and humanity into the courtroom — and into the lives of millions who watched him.
