ISLAMABAD, October 16, 2024 – The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) has announced the implementation of a new grading system for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) examinations. This initiative aims to enhance fairness, transparency, and accuracy in student evaluations.
The new grading framework features a 10-point system (A++, A+, A, B++, B+, B, C, D, E, U) that replaces the previous 7-point system (A-1, A, B, C, D, E, F). Additionally, the passing marks have been increased from 33% to 40%, and grades will now be reported instead of absolute scores.
Under this system, grade points will be used to calculate the Grade Point Average (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). The objectives of the new grading system include controlling grading inflation, minimizing competition for maximum marks, and ensuring an accurate reflection of student learning and achievements.
The phased implementation will begin in the 2024 academic year, initially applying to grade 9 (SSC) and grade 11 (HSSC). During the 2024-2025 admission cycle, universities will consider both the old and new grading systems. From 2025 onwards, colleges and universities will exclusively refer to CGPA and grades.
The introduction of this new grading system will raise the difficulty level for passing examinations, and a grace marks policy will be implemented to support students. Furthermore, teaching practices may need to be adjusted, and students will receive descriptive feedback on their performance.
The Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), and Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) have been informed about the changes. Examination boards are required to clarify the new grading system on result slips.
This reform seeks to enhance the credibility and reliability of Pakistan’s education system, providing a more accurate assessment of student performance. Federal authorities, as well as those in Sindh, Balochistan, AJK, and Gilgit Baltistan, have already notified the new grading policy.
