Karachi, December 6, 2025: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Saturday formally inaugurated the 35th National Games at the National Stadium Karachi, marking the city’s return as host of the country’s premier multi-sport event after nearly 18 years.
The highlight of the ceremony came when Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem lit the National Games torch, followed by a spectacular javelin throw demonstration that energized the crowd and underscored Pakistan’s rising global stature in athletics.
Addressing athletes, officials, and guests, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari welcomed participants from across the country and lauded Karachi’s role in revitalizing Pakistan’s sporting culture.
“Karachi is hosting the National Games after 18 years. I welcome all of you to this vibrant city and congratulate everyone involved in the successful hosting of the National Games. We are committed to providing our youth with a positive and energetic environment,” he said. He highlighted the role of sports in youth development, national unity, and promoting a healthy society, adding that events like these demonstrate Pakistan’s resilience despite political or economic challenges.
Earlier in the evening, Bilawal and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah arrived at the National Stadium amid warm applause. They were received by Sindh Sports Minister Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar and provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Senior officials from Sindh’s sports department and the National Games organizers were also present.
The opening ceremony featured traditional cultural performances, an athletes’ parade, and visual displays celebrating Karachi’s diversity and sports legacy. Large screens inside the stadium highlighted Pakistan’s sporting heroes, with the audience particularly cheering Arshad Nadeem’s appearance.
PPP leadership noted that the provincial government has invested heavily in sports infrastructure, training facilities, and youth programs across Sindh, and described the successful launch of the 35th National Games as a testament to this commitment.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari concluded by expressing hope that athletes would demonstrate sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence throughout the event, saying the National Games would unite the provinces and inspire the younger generation to pursue their dreams in sports.
