Muslim foreign ministers reject Israel’s recognition of ‘Somaliland,’ reaffirm support for Somalia’s sovereignty

Islamabad, December 28,2025: A group of foreign ministers from more than 20 Muslim-majority countries, along with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have strongly rejected Israel’s reported recognition of the “Somaliland” region of the Federal Republic of Somalia, terming the move a serious violation of international law and a threat to regional and global peace.

In a joint position underscored by the foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, The Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Türkiye, Yemen, as well as the OIC, the ministers unequivocally rejected Israel’s action taken on December 26, 2025.

The ministers warned that such an unprecedented step carries serious repercussions for peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, with broader implications for international peace and security. They said the move reflects Israel’s blatant disregard for international law.

Condemning the decision in the strongest terms, the joint stance described the recognition as a grave violation of the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, which explicitly uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. The ministers noted that the action reflects expansionist tendencies and sets a dangerous precedent.

The group reaffirmed its full support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and categorically rejected any measures that undermine Somalia’s authority over its entire territory.

They further cautioned that the recognition of parts of sovereign states threatens international peace and security and violates the cardinal principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Additionally, the ministers fully rejected any attempt to link Israel’s move with efforts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people from their land, stressing that such actions are unacceptable in any form and are rejected as a matter of principle.

The joint position underscores broad diplomatic opposition within the Muslim world to Israel’s reported move and reiterates collective support for Somalia’s sovereignty and established international norms.
