Islamabad, March 30, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said the government is taking comprehensive steps to provide relief to lower and middle-income groups amid rising fuel prices driven by the ongoing Iran-related global energy crisis.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review the impact of Middle East tensions on Pakistan’s petroleum stocks and public relief initiatives, the premier was briefed on measures being implemented to cushion the economic burden on citizens.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office Pakistan, the government is working with provincial authorities to finalise the registration process for motorcycle and rickshaw owners, enabling them to benefit from a proposed subsidised fuel scheme. The initiative, first announced on March 17, aims to protect vulnerable segments from the impact of rising oil prices.
“We will not leave the economically weaker sections alone in this hour of difficulty,” the prime minister said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to public relief.
Highlighting austerity efforts, Shehbaz Sharif said the government has significantly curtailed its expenditures, including cuts in development spending, restrictions on non-essential expenses, and reducing the use of government vehicles by 60 percent to conserve fuel.
The premier added that despite global pressures, the government has decided against increasing domestic oil prices, opting instead to redirect savings towards relief measures. He also noted that a digital system would be introduced to ensure transparent and efficient delivery of subsidies.
Officials informed the meeting that Pakistan currently holds adequate fuel reserves and that timely decisions have prevented any disruption in supply. The review also covered fuel conservation strategies, future planning, and existing stock levels.
An audit report by the Intelligence Bureau Pakistan on the implementation of austerity measures and progress of the campaign was also presented.
The meeting was further told that while prices of high-octane fuel for large vehicles have increased, there has been no change in jet fuel prices. Additionally, sufficient stocks of medicines are available to meet national requirements.
The prime minister also underscored Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting peace in the Middle East, noting that regional stability remains crucial for global energy markets and domestic economic stability.
