Chennai, April 13, 2026: Authorities in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu have arrested six individuals after a high-definition version of actor Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan was illegally leaked online ahead of its official release.
The state’s cybercrime wing confirmed that more than 300 piracy links have been blocked as part of an ongoing crackdown aimed at curbing digital copyright violations. According to Indian media reports, the arrests were made following a complaint filed by the film’s producers, VN Productions, who alleged that the film was being widely shared across multiple online platforms without authorization.
Officials stated that clips—and in some cases the full movie—surfaced online on April 9, prompting an immediate investigation. Law enforcement agencies subsequently launched a coordinated operation involving digital forensic analysis and cyber-tracking to identify the sources of the leak.
Cases have been registered under several legal provisions, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Copyright Act, 1957, and the Cinematograph Act, 1952.
Special investigation teams tracked upload sources and identified suspects allegedly involved in distributing the film via cloud storage services and shared drive links. Authorities have also seized digital devices and other evidence from those arrested to support ongoing legal proceedings.
The cybercrime unit stated that monitoring of social media platforms, websites, and file-sharing services continues to prevent further unauthorized distribution. Officials warned the public against downloading or sharing pirated content, emphasizing that such actions constitute a punishable offence and may result in strict legal consequences.
Producers have likewise urged viewers to delete illegal links immediately to avoid legal repercussions.
Actor Vijay has not yet commented on the incident, as he remains occupied with his political party’s election campaign. Meanwhile, Jana Nayagan, a commercial film with political undertones, has also faced delays due to objections raised by the censor board, with its certification still pending.
The incident highlights the growing challenges of digital piracy in the entertainment industry and underscores the importance of safeguarding intellectual property rights in the era of online streaming and file sharing.
