Lahore, April 18, 2026: Pakistani film actor Shaan Shahid has sparked widespread discussion on social media after comments he made about music and Qawwali during a public event celebrating the success of his film Bullah.
Speaking at the event, Shaan highlighted Pakistan’s rich cultural and musical heritage, with particular emphasis on Qawwali, which he described as an important artistic tradition and a key part of national identity. He also urged greater international promotion of the genre as a representation of Pakistan’s cultural soft power.
The actor further suggested that Pakistani musical traditions carry a lasting artistic influence and should be showcased more prominently on global platforms.
However, his remarks, especially those referencing music in relation to religious permissibility, quickly triggered debate online. Clips of his statement circulated widely, drawing mixed reactions from users with differing cultural and religious viewpoints.
A segment of social media users criticised the comments, arguing that instrumental music is not permissible, while others questioned his interpretation of religious perspectives. Some users also mocked the remarks, whereas others defended Shaan, stating that his comments were intended as cultural appreciation rather than religious commentary.
The discussion intensified as the debate expanded into broader questions about the difference between artistic expression and religious interpretation, with users engaging in heated exchanges across platforms.
Shaan Shahid, known for major films including Khuda Ke Liye, Waar and Zarrar, remains one of Pakistan’s most prominent film personalities and continues to actively participate in cultural and public discourse.
