Bushra Bibi moves IHC seeking suspension of sentence in £190 million case on medical grounds

Islamabad, April 18, 2026: Bushra Bibi, wife of former jailed prime minister Imran Khan, has approached the Islamabad High Court seeking suspension of her sentence in the £190 million corruption case on medical grounds.

Bushra Bibi is currently serving a seven-year sentence in the case, which pertains to allegations of granting undue benefits to property tycoon Malik Riaz in the repatriation of allegedly laundered funds from the United Kingdom. Her appeal against the conviction remains pending before the high court.

In a separate development in December 2025, she was also sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment in the Toshakhana 2 case, related to the purchase of an expensive jewellery set gifted to former prime minister Imran Khan by the Saudi Crown Prince during his 2021 visit.

In her application filed through counsels Salman Safdar and Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry, Bushra Bibi requested urgent suspension of sentence, stating that she is currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail and undergoing treatment following an eye surgery at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.

The petition alleged that the surgery and related medical procedures were not communicated in advance to her legal team or family members. It further stated that her daughters were only informed after meeting her on April 17, when they reportedly found her in a distressed condition with bandaged eyes and impaired vision.

The plea also claimed that jail authorities did not provide complete medical records, including diagnosis details, operation notes, or post-operative care documentation.

The application raised concerns over transparency and procedural compliance, alleging that the medical procedure was conducted without prior consent or legal consultation. It further claimed that access to counsel and family was restricted, despite court directions.

It also argued that Bushra Bibi’s condition deteriorated due to inadequate medical care in custody and that her continued detention after surgery amounted to inhumane treatment.

The petition urged the court to summon jail authorities and hospital officials along with complete medical records. It also sought her transfer to a specialised medical facility for proper treatment and care.

Citing legal precedent, the plea maintained that severe medical hardship and lack of adequate treatment constitute valid grounds for bail or suspension of sentence, particularly when appeals remain pending.

According to jail officials, Bushra Bibi had earlier complained of vision issues in her right eye. Medical examinations reportedly diagnosed retinal detachment, following which doctors recommended surgical intervention. She was shifted back to Adiala Jail after the procedure.

The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings in multiple high-profile cases involving the former first family, as court hearings continue in Islamabad.
