Trump warns Hamas again: release hostages soon, or face consequences

Washington, December 17: US President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his stern warning to Hamas, urging the release of hostages held in Gaza by January 20, 2025—the day he assumes office—or face severe consequences.

During a press conference in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said, “I had a very good talk with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the war in Gaza. As you know, I’ve warned that if these hostages aren’t back home by that date, all hell is going to break out.” He further cautioned, “If no ceasefire deal is reached by the time I take office, it’s not going to be pleasant.”

The conflict stems from Hamas-led militants’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of over 250 individuals, including Israeli-American dual nationals. According to Israeli authorities, more than 100 hostages have since been freed through negotiations or rescue operations, though approximately 100 are still believed to be held in Gaza, with roughly half thought to be alive.

President Joe Biden has recently dispatched senior aides to the region to push for a ceasefire deal and the safe return of the hostages. However, the situation remains tense, with Trump’s impending presidency adding new urgency to the crisis.
