Cape Town test: South Africa end day 1 at 316/4 against Pakistan

Cape Town, January 3, 2025: South Africa concluded the first day of the second Test against Pakistan in a strong position, scoring 316 runs for the loss of four wickets. Centuries by Ryan Rickelton and captain Temba Bavuma solidified the hosts’ dominance.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first at Newlands, South Africa faced early trouble, losing three wickets for just 72 runs. However, a remarkable 235-run partnership between opener Ryan Rickelton and skipper Temba Bavuma steadied the innings and put South Africa in control.

Rickelton remained unbeaten on 176 at stumps, with David Bedingham accompanying him on 4. Bavuma played a captain’s knock, scoring 106 runs before being dismissed. Other notable dismissals included Aiden Markram (17), Wiaan Mulder (5), and Tristan Stubbs (0).

For Pakistan, Agha Salman was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets, while Khurram Shehzad and Mohammad Abbas claimed one wicket each.

With Rickelton still at the crease, South Africa will look to build on their strong start when play resumes on the second day. Pakistan, on the other hand, will aim for early breakthroughs to regain control of the match.
