Leicester, April 13, 2025: Professor Khurshid Ahmad, a distinguished Islamic economist, former senator, and senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), passed away in Leicester, United Kingdom, at the age of 93, the party confirmed on Sunday.

A towering intellectual figure and a close associate of JI founder Syed Abul A’la Maududi, Prof. Ahmad dedicated his life to scholarship and the Islamic movement. His work spanned decades of thought leadership in Islamic economics, education, and socio-political philosophy. He authored numerous books and papers that continue to influence scholars and policymakers worldwide.

“Professor Khurshid Ahmad was one of the pioneering thinkers of Islamic economics and an institution in himself,” Jamaat-e-Islami said in an official statement.

His contributions earned him global recognition. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious King Faisal International Prize, and in 2011, the Government of Pakistan conferred upon him the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of the country’s highest civilian honours. He was also the first recipient of the Islamic Development Bank Award for Islamic economics.

JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, along with senior leaders Liaqat Baloch and others, expressed profound grief at his passing.

“His departure is an irreparable loss to the intellectual world and the Islamic movement,” said Rehman.
