Islamabad, April 17, 2025: The United Kingdom is prepared to partner with Pakistan in its journey toward becoming a $2 trillion economy, British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott said on Thursday, reaffirming Britain’s long-term commitment to the country’s economic progress.

Speaking at the Leaders in Islamabad Business Summit, Marriott highlighted the UK’s intention to deepen its strategic partnership with Pakistan across key sectors including finance, education, healthcare, engineering, and energy.

“If Pakistan continues on its current trajectory of reforms and economic stability, there’s every reason to believe it could achieve the $2 trillion milestone,” she said.

The UK remains one of the world’s largest providers of trade, financial, and business services and sees significant potential in Pakistan’s young and energetic population. Marriott described the UK-Pakistan relationship as “two sides of the same coin,” noting that bilateral ties have strengthened considerably in recent years.

Trade between the two countries currently stands at £4.4 billion, with both sides aiming to more than double it to £10 billion in the near future.

Marriott pointed to joint ventures such as the Reko Diq mining project, clean energy partnerships, and climate resilience initiatives as examples of the UK’s multifaceted engagement with Pakistan. She also emphasized that the UK’s support goes beyond economic cooperation, focusing heavily on social development—including ongoing reforms in education, public health, and engineering.

She welcomed Pakistan’s recent economic reforms, particularly those carried out under International Monetary Fund (IMF) programs, and expressed the UK’s full support for these efforts, citing their importance for sustainable economic stability.

Marriott also announced that Britain is funding a $45 million macroeconomic development programme in Pakistan and is actively supporting clean and green energy projects vital for the country’s long-term sustainability.

“Our collaboration with Pakistan is anchored in strategic, long-term thinking and a shared vision of its immense potential,” she added.

Commending the organizers of the summit—particularly Azfar Ahsan—for fostering dialogue among global leaders and policymakers, Marriott reiterated that the UK is committed to supporting Pakistan in building a stronger, more inclusive, and resilient economy.
