Muzaffarabad, October 26, 2025: Political uncertainty deepened in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as questions arose over whether Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq will resign or face a no-confidence motion in the legislative assembly.
According to political sources, a change in government is expected in AJK either through the prime minister’s resignation or a no-confidence move, and Anwarul Haq has begun consultations on the matter. A final decision regarding his political future is expected within the next 48 hours.
The AJK Legislative Assembly has a total of 52 members, and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) needs the support of 27 members to form the government. Currently, the PPP holds 17 seats, PML-N nine, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf four, while the Muslim Conference and Jammu Kashmir Peoples Party each have one member. A 20-member forward bloc also exists within the assembly.
If the PML-N extends its support, the PPP’s total strength would rise to 26 members, leaving the party just one vote short of a majority. The PPP has therefore intensified contacts with members of the forward bloc to secure the required numbers for government formation.
Meanwhile, the PPP leadership continues to deliberate on its strategy for forming the government, with major political developments expected in the coming days. However, the party has not yet publicly demonstrated that it has secured the necessary majority in the assembly.
