New York, November 9, 2025: The United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee has adopted four resolutions tabled by Pakistan, focusing on regional disarmament, confidence-building measures, and security assurances for non-nuclear states.
According to Pakistan’s mission to the UN, two of the resolutions — Regional Disarmament and Confidence-Building Measures in the Regional and Sub-Regional Contexts — were adopted by consensus. The other two — Negative Security Assurances and Conventional Arms Control at the Regional and Sub-Regional Levels — also received strong support from member states.
In a statement, Pakistan’s mission said the adoption of these resolutions reflects international recognition of the need to safeguard non-nuclear states from the threat or use of nuclear weapons. The mission reiterated that Pakistan has consistently played a leading role in promoting nuclear and regional disarmament, as well as conventional arms control, within the UN framework.
The approvals come just months after a brief but intense border conflict between Pakistan and India in May, which left dozens dead and reignited concerns over stability in South Asia.
The clash erupted after an attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam area. India accused Pakistan of orchestrating the assault — a claim Islamabad strongly denied, calling instead for a neutral investigation.
During the hostilities, Pakistan reportedly shot down several Indian fighter jets and drones. The fighting subsided following a US-brokered ceasefire on May 10.
In the aftermath, Pakistan’s Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, cautioned that the absence of effective crisis-management mechanisms between the two nuclear-armed neighbours heightens the risk of future escalation.
“Without reliable communication and crisis-management channels, even limited incidents could spiral out of control,” General Mirza had warned.
The adoption of Pakistan’s resolutions, observers say, underscores renewed global attention to regional stability and disarmament efforts in South Asia.
