Punjab government forms 12 JITs to probe cases against banned TLP

Lahore, November 19, 2025: The Punjab government has constituted 12 joint investigation teams (JITs) to investigate multiple cases registered against the proscribed Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), according to notifications issued by the provincial home department.

Eleven notifications are dated November 6, while one was issued on October 31.

According to the documents, five JITs have been formed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 for cases registered in Sheikhupura district — four in Muridke and one in Ferozewala. Each of these teams will comprise six members, including an SP, SDPO, SHO, IO, a CTD DSP, and a co-opted member.

Another seven JITs have been established in Lahore, where cases have been lodged in Nawankot (3), Shahdara Town (3) and Ravi Road (1). These teams will include five members: SP Investigation, DSP Investigation, IO, a CTD DSP and a co-opted member.

The notifications direct JIT conveners to depute a member responsible for submitting investigation reports under Section 19(1) of ATA 1997.

The move comes amid an intensified crackdown on the TLP after the group was banned following violent clashes with law enforcement personnel in Muridke last month. The clashes erupted when the group attempted a protest march towards Islamabad following the Gaza ceasefire plan, with authorities later accusing the organisation of engaging in terrorism and violent acts.

Meanwhile, police efforts to trace TLP Chief Saad Rizvi and his brother Anas Rizvi remain unsuccessful. Both were placed on the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL) along with 21 other party leaders on October 29 to prevent their travel abroad.

A senior Lahore police official said that around 1,250 key members of the organisation — including alleged financiers and individuals wanted in over 100 criminal cases — have been arrested so far. Raids across Lahore continue daily, with geofencing used to identify members involved in the group’s march routes in Lahore and Muridke.

The crackdown has reportedly forced many families of “wanted” TLP members to flee their homes to avoid repeated police raids.

On Tuesday, Punjab Minister for Information Azma Bokhari announced that TLP assets worth Rs23.40 billion and 92 bank accounts linked to the group had been frozen.
