Washington, January 14, 2026: US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to the Supreme Court regarding global trade tariffs, stating that if the court declares his imposed duties invalid, the United States would have to refund hundreds of billions of dollars, potentially causing a severe crisis for the nation’s economy. Trump made this statement in a lengthy post on social media, where he described the situation as “complete chaos.”
President Trump asserted that if the Supreme Court’s decision goes against the tariffs, it would not only impact matters related to national security but also plunge the US into a severe financial crisis. He emphasized, “If the decision goes against us, we’ll be in deep trouble. Repayments would be nearly impossible, and calculating such a massive amount could take years. Anyone who thinks this issue can be resolved easily is gravely mistaken.”
This statement comes at a time when the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the legality of the Trump administration’s extensive global tariff system. According to sources, the decision could be announced today, Wednesday. This case is seen as a critical legal test of Trump’s controversial economic policies and presidential powers. The tariffs, announced last April, imposed additional duties on goods imported into the US, aimed at protecting domestic industries and reducing trade deficits. However, these measures have been challenged by small businesses and 12 US states. The plaintiffs argue that President Trump exceeded his constitutional authority by imposing these duties.
During the November hearing, the Supreme Court expressed significant doubts about the legal basis of the Trump administration’s actions. The justices raised multiple questions about the president’s authority to impose tariffs, particularly whether these measures are justified on national security grounds. The Trump administration claims that these tariffs are essential for strengthening America’s economic and national security, while opponents argue that they are harming international trade and having negative effects on the domestic economy.
In his post, Trump provided further details, saying that reversing the tariffs after the decision would be extremely complicated, as affected businesses and countries could file claims for refunds. According to him, “It could take several years to figure out what amount we’re talking about, and even who, when, and where to make the payments. This would be a crisis that shakes America’s economic stability to its core.”
Economists say that if the Supreme Court declares the tariffs illegal, the effects would extend to global trade. US trading partners, particularly China, the European Union, and Canada, which have been most affected by these tariffs, could potentially file claims for repayments. Estimates suggest that the revenue from these tariffs has reached hundreds of billions of dollars, and their refund could put immense pressure on the US budget.
Trump’s post has stirred controversy in political circles. Some members of the Republican Party have supported the president’s stance, while Democrats have labeled it an attempt to pressure the judiciary. One Democratic senator stated, “President Trump’s statement is an attack on judicial independence, which is dangerous for democracy.”
This case could prove to be a milestone in US history regarding presidential powers and trade policies. If the decision favors Trump, it would further bolster his economic strategy, whereas an adverse ruling would be a major setback for his administration. The eyes of the world are now focused on the Supreme Court’s decision, which could be announced at any time today.
