Lahore, January 15, 2026: The Philippine Embassy in Islamabad successfully conducted a two-day consular mission in Lahore last month, delivering essential services to the Filipino community while promoting cultural diplomacy, historical remembrance, and gender empowerment initiatives.
A 10-member Embassy delegation addressed a wide range of consular matters, including passport applications, jurat and notarial services, and general consular inquiries. The outreach brought government services closer to Filipinos living and working in Punjab, underscoring the Embassy’s commitment to accessible, responsive, and people-centered consular assistance across Pakistan.
The delegation was led by Third Secretary and Vice Consul Rain R. Mendoza and Administrative Officer Christian Glenn Baggas, along with locally engaged Foreign Service staff Billy Aguilar, Hamza Ali Khan, Anwar Din, Hemayun Masood Sherwani, Asmat Ullah Shah, Bakhtawar Shah, Muhammad Iqbal, and Shujaat Ali Umer.
The consular mission coincided with the advance commemoration of the 129th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. José P. Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero. The event was held on December 28, 2025, at the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Lahore and was graciously hosted by Philippine Honorary Consul Fahdel Sheikh. It was attended by members of the Filipino community, representatives from Lahore’s business sector, and honorary consuls from various countries.
Prior to the formal program, a Catholic Mass was celebrated at the Consulate, during which Fr. Andrew Wong, SDB, reflected on Dr. Rizal’s enduring relevance, particularly as a role model for today’s youth—an intellectual, patriot, and migrant whose sacrifices continue to inspire Filipinos worldwide.
One of the highlights of the event was the formal presentation of the Philippine coat of arms to Honorary Consul Sheikh, symbolizing trust, partnership, and a shared responsibility in promoting Philippine interests and values in Lahore. The program also featured an address by Ms. Virginia Calvin, who spoke on Dr. Rizal’s life and works, emphasizing his intellectual brilliance, moral clarity, and continued relevance to overseas Filipinos, noting that Rizal himself experienced life as a migrant.
The commemoration included a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of Dr. Rizal, following remarks by P/Col. Wilbert Charlie Perry Divina of the Office of the Philippine Police Attaché, who delivered the message of the Chief of the Philippine National Police. Wreaths were offered by the Philippine Embassy, the Honorary Consulate, and the Filipino community, with arrangements generously sponsored by the Honorary Consulate.
Balancing solemn remembrance with community fellowship, the event also featured interactive games and activities organized by the Honorary Consulate. A notable component was the integration of a Gender and Development (GAD) initiative through a mini-bazaar that provided Filipino women entrepreneurs a platform to showcase and sell their products, including home-prepared delicacies. The initiative supported women’s economic participation and aligned with the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs’ gender mainstreaming objectives.
In addition to consular and community activities, the delegation participated in cultural exchange visits organized by Honorary Consul Sheikh and leaders of the Lahore Filipino Community. These included visits to the Wagah Border to witness the historic changing-of-the-guards ceremony between Pakistan and India, and to the Shalimar Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The experience fostered deeper appreciation of shared history and cultural heritage, reinforcing the Embassy’s commitment to public and cultural diplomacy as a bridge between nations.
