Bhutto’s democratic legacy lives on, says Chairman Senate

Islamabad, April 4, 2026: Senate of Pakistan Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani paid tribute to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, describing him as a symbol of democracy, ideology, and people’s empowerment.

Addressing a seminar at the Rawalpindi Arts Council as chief guest on the 47th death anniversary of the former prime minister, Gilani said April 4 remains a significant and painful day in the country’s history, reflecting the sacrifices made for democratic rights.

He highlighted that the Constitution of Pakistan 1973 stands as one of Bhutto’s greatest achievements, laying a strong foundation for Pakistan’s democratic framework. He added that the creation of the Senate was part of Bhutto’s federal vision to ensure equal provincial representation and address grievances among federating units.

Gilani further noted that the 18th Constitutional Amendment strengthened democracy by devolving powers to the provinces. He said Bhutto elevated Pakistan’s global standing, empowered citizens with the right to vote, and ensured the protection of fundamental rights.

The Senate chairman also credited Bhutto with initiating Pakistan’s nuclear program and establishing key industrial projects, including the Pakistan Steel Mills, which contributed to national development and employment.

Paying tribute to Benazir Bhutto, he said she carried forward Bhutto’s mission with determination, while Asif Ali Zardari played a key role in strengthening parliamentary democracy through constitutional reforms. He also described Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as a representative of the younger generation, emphasizing the importance of youth in shaping Pakistan’s future.

Gilani said the sacrifices of the Bhutto family for democracy remain unforgettable and reaffirmed that their vision of social justice and public welfare continues to guide political leadership.

The seminar was organized by Mian Khurram Rasool and was also addressed by Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Chaudhry Yasin, Amir Fida Paracha, and other party leaders, who paid tribute to Bhutto’s political and public services.
