Washington/Tehran, April 5, 2026: US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening strikes on key infrastructure including power plants and bridges, as tensions between the two countries escalate further.
In a strongly worded post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran,” signaling potential military action if Tehran fails to meet US demands. The warning follows his earlier ultimatum for Iran to reach a deal or reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Conflicting claims over rescue operation
The escalating rhetoric comes amid conflicting accounts over a US military rescue mission inside Iran. While Trump claimed a successful operation to recover a downed pilot, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rejected the claim, asserting the mission ended in failure.
In a statement, the IRGC said a joint operation involving multiple Iranian forces led to the destruction of US military assets, including C-130 transport aircraft and Black Hawk helicopters. It described the outcome as another “humiliating defeat” for the United States, drawing parallels with the failed Operation Eagle Claw during the Iran hostage crisis.
Iranian officials accused Washington of spreading misleading narratives to cover up battlefield losses, while emphasizing what they described as the superiority of Iran’s military response.
US maintains pilot was rescued
Despite Iran’s claims, Trump insisted that the US military had carried out one of its “most daring” rescue missions, stating that the injured pilot—identified as a colonel—was safely recovered after being stranded behind enemy lines.
According to US statements, dozens of aircraft were deployed in the operation, and the pilot is now receiving medical care. The Pentagon has yet to provide detailed confirmation.
Regional escalation intensifies
The situation has further deteriorated with Iran claiming responsibility for attacks on petrochemical facilities in Gulf countries, including the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Iranian drone strikes reportedly caused fires and significant damage to energy infrastructure in Kuwait, though no casualties were reported.
Iran warned that its attacks on US-linked economic interests would intensify if strikes on its territory continue.
Meanwhile, Washington and Israel have increased pressure on Tehran, with reports indicating potential strikes on Iranian energy facilities in the coming days, pending US approval.
Diplomacy remains uncertain
Amid the rising tensions, prospects for diplomacy remain uncertain. Iran has indicated it is open to talks but insists on a “lasting end” to what it calls an imposed war. Pakistani mediation efforts have so far failed to produce a breakthrough.
Iran has also warned that further escalation by the US and Israel could turn the “entire region into a hell,” underscoring fears of a broader conflict with global economic implications, particularly due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.
The conflict, now in its sixth week, has already resulted in significant casualties, economic disruption, and growing international concern over a wider regional war.
