Canberra, April 8,2026: The government of Anthony Albanese has welcomed a newly announced two-week ceasefire agreement involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, aimed at opening space for negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a joint statement, Prime Minister Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized that Australia has consistently called for de-escalation and a peaceful end to hostilities. The leaders underscored that prolonging the conflict would deepen its global economic impact and significantly increase human suffering.
The statement highlighted concerns over Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, along with reported attacks on commercial shipping, civilian infrastructure, and energy facilities. These developments, the government noted, have triggered major disruptions in global energy supply and contributed to rising oil and fuel prices.
Australia also reaffirmed its diplomatic engagement with international partners to ensure the reopening of critical maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, enabling the flow of essential supplies, particularly to vulnerable populations.
Acknowledging regional diplomatic efforts, the Australian government expressed appreciation for the role played by countries including Pakistan, Egypt, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia in advancing de-escalation initiatives.
Canberra reiterated its support for the ceasefire and called on all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, stressing the urgent need to safeguard civilian lives and work toward a lasting resolution to the conflict.
