Muzaffarabad, June 23, 2026: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court on Tuesday delivered a major legal victory for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), annulling the Election Commission’s decision to revoke the party’s registration and ordering its immediate restoration.

The verdict was announced by a larger bench headed by Chief Justice Sadaqat Hussain Raja. The petition had been filed by PTI AJK President and former Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi, challenging the Election Commission of AJK’s decision to derecognise the party as a registered political entity in the region.

In its ruling, the court held that the Election Commission’s decision was unlawful and violated fundamental political and democratic rights. The bench directed the commission to restore PTI’s registration without delay and allow its candidates to contest upcoming elections under the party’s banner and electoral symbol.

The court further instructed the Election Commission of AJK to issue a formal notification restoring PTI’s status and updating the official list of registered political parties accordingly.

For several weeks prior to the verdict, PTI candidates in Azad Kashmir faced significant uncertainty following the suspension of the party’s registration, which prevented them from submitting nomination papers under the party name and resulted in the removal of the party’s “bat” electoral symbol from the electoral process. The development had forced several prospective candidates to consider contesting as independents, reshaping early electoral dynamics in the region.

The restoration of PTI’s registration is expected to have immediate political implications, as the “bat” symbol remains one of the party’s most recognisable electoral identifiers. Political observers in Muzaffarabad view the ruling as a significant boost for PTI ahead of the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections.

Party supporters and workers have welcomed the decision, describing it as a major relief and a turning point in their election campaign preparations.

Legal experts note that the judgment may also set an important precedent regarding political party registration disputes and the role of electoral authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s evolving political landscape.
