Wana, July 18, 2026: Security forces foiled a major terrorist attack during an intelligence-based operation in Wana, South Waziristan district, by destroying an explosives-laden vehicle and killing a suspected terrorist, security sources said on Saturday.
According to the sources, one suspected militant was killed while five others were injured during the operation.
Security officials said the vehicle had remained under surveillance for three consecutive days before action was taken. The operation was launched only after the vehicle had moved away from a populated area to ensure the safety of civilians and prevent collateral damage.
The sources said the vehicle was packed with explosives and was believed to be intended for use in a terrorist attack. It was destroyed before the suspected suicide bombing could be carried out.
The operation came a day after security forces killed at least 24 suspected militants during intelligence-based operations in Bannu district.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operations were launched following a recent surge in terrorist attacks, including a vehicle-borne suicide bombing in Bannu that targeted law enforcement personnel and civilians.
The military’s media wing said security forces conducted extensive intelligence-based operations over the past 24 hours, resulting in the killing of 24 militants in Bannu district and adjoining areas after intense exchanges of fire.
Pakistan has witnessed a rise in militant violence, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since 2021.
In response to cross-border attacks, Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq in February this year. According to Information Minister Ataullah Tarar, the operation has resulted in the killing of 684 Afghan Taliban operatives and allied militants, while more than 900 others have been injured.
