Riyadh, May 26, 2025: Saudi authorities have categorically denied recent foreign media reports suggesting that the Kingdom plans to introduce alcohol sales in 2026, calling the claims baseless and misleading.
Arab News reported citing informed sources, “these reports lack any official confirmation from relevant authorities and do not reflect the Kingdom’s current policies or regulations.” The sources emphasized that there is no change in Saudi Arabia’s long-standing prohibition on alcohol.
The clarification comes amid a wave of speculation following unverified reports in international media suggesting a policy shift as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 reforms. However, officials reaffirm that the Kingdom remains committed to offering a tourism experience that aligns with its cultural and religious values.
“Saudi Arabia aims to provide a unique and culturally immersive journey for international tourists,” the sources stated. “This approach continues to receive strong approval from global visitors who are drawn to the Kingdom’s rich heritage, archaeological wonders, and natural beauty.”
On the issue of alcohol regulations for non-Muslim diplomatic missions, the sources explained that Saudi Arabia recently implemented new rules to prevent misuse of diplomatic privileges. Embassies are no longer permitted to import alcohol and certain restricted items through diplomatic shipments. However, under tightly controlled and regulated conditions, limited access to such items may still be allowed for non-Muslim diplomats.
Officials further highlighted the Kingdom’s surging tourism numbers. Saudi Arabia welcomed 29.7 million international tourists in 2024, marking an 8% increase from 27.4 million in 2023. Tourism spending also soared, reaching SAR 283.8 billion, of which SAR 168.5 billion came from international visitors.
The tourism sector’s robust growth is seen as a cornerstone of the Kingdom’s economic diversification strategy under Vision 2030, contributing significantly to job creation and investment across various regions.
