Tehran, December 14, 2025: Special representatives of Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries and Russia held an important regional meeting in Tehran, during which Pakistan strongly raised its serious concerns over terrorism and stressed the urgent need to effectively address the security threats faced by the country.

Pakistan was represented at the Tehran meeting by its Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ambassador Muhammad Sadiq. The Pakistani delegation also included Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Mudassir Tipu, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani.

The meeting was inaugurated with a keynote address by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to sources, the Pakistani delegation emphasised that stability in Afghanistan was in the interest of the entire region and reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to promoting peace, development and sustainable security in the region.

Separately, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said during a press conference that Iran would also be severely affected by any escalation in tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, noting that Iran shares borders with both countries. He said Tehran respected the Taliban government’s decision not to attend the conference but added that participation in such regional forums could help promote mutual understanding and contribute to resolving issues between Afghanistan and its neighbours.

On the sidelines of the conference, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The two discussed high-level contacts between the leadership of Pakistan and Iran and ways to further strengthen bilateral relations. Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan and appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and stability in the region.

Muhammad Sadiq thanked Iran for hosting the meeting of Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries and Russia, expressing hope that the forum would play an effective role in advancing peace, stability and development in the region.

Meanwhile, the Taliban-led Afghan government did not participate in the regional conference on Afghanistan in Tehran, despite having received a formal invitation. Afghan Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesperson Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Islamic Emirate had been invited to the meeting but decided not to attend.
