Trump offers support for Kashmir resolution, hails ceasefire between India and Pakistan

Washington, May 11, 2025: Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday praised the leadership of Pakistan and India for agreeing to a ceasefire, describing the move as a “historic and heroic” step toward peace. He pledged to support efforts for a long-term resolution of the Kashmir dispute and vowed to significantly boost trade with both nations.

Posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump commended both countries for what he described as a courageous decision to halt escalating hostilities.

“I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to recognize that it was time to end the current aggression that could have led to massive death and destruction,” Trump wrote. “Millions of good and innocent people could have died. Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions.”

Trump also acknowledged the role of the United States in brokering the ceasefire. “I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision,” he added.

Although the long-standing Kashmir dispute was not formally addressed in the ceasefire talks, Trump expressed his intention to work with both nations to find a lasting solution. “I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir,” he said. “God bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!”

Reiterating his commitment to deepening economic ties, Trump announced plans to “increase trade substantially” with both India and Pakistan, referring to them as “great nations.”

The ceasefire follows a dramatic escalation of tensions after a deadly attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, located in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which left 26 people dead. India accused Pakistan-based actors of orchestrating the attack but failed to provide concrete evidence. Pakistan firmly rejected the allegations.

In response, India closed the Wagah border, revoked Pakistani visas, and announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty on April 23 — actions Islamabad condemned as “acts of war.” Pakistan subsequently sealed the Wagah border from its side.

Hostilities peaked on May 6–7 when India launched a military strike, triggering the most serious clash between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in decades. Despite multiple warnings from Islamabad, Indian forces continued provocative activities, including drone incursions, prompting Pakistan to retaliate.

The U.S.-brokered ceasefire, announced yesterday, prevented the crisis from escalating further. However, within hours of the agreement, India’s foreign secretary accused Pakistan of violating the truce. Pakistan’s Foreign Office swiftly rejected the claims in a late-night statement.

“Pakistan remains committed to the faithful implementation of the ceasefire agreement announced earlier today,” the statement read.
