Islamabad/Tehran, June 22, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday held a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which he strongly condemned the U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, terming them a grave violation of international law and urging an immediate return to dialogue and diplomacy.
The call came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had “completely and totally obliterated” Iran’s key nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The strikes, part of a major escalation following over a week of Israeli military aggression, have sent shockwaves across the region and drawn widespread international concern.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz conveyed Pakistan’s “unequivocal condemnation” of the U.S. action, which he said followed Israel’s “unprovoked and unjustified” attacks on Iran over the past eight days.
The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with the government and people of Iran, extended heartfelt condolences over the loss of innocent lives, and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
Highlighting that the targeted Iranian facilities were under the monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Shehbaz Sharif said the attacks constituted a serious breach of international law and the IAEA Statute. He underscored Iran’s legitimate right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, while at the same time stressing the urgent need for all sides to de-escalate.
“Dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward,” the Prime Minister stated, adding that Pakistan stands ready to play a constructive role in supporting peace efforts.
President Pezeshkian expressed deep appreciation for Pakistan’s solidarity and support, thanking the government, the people, and the military leadership for standing with Iran during this critical time.
The two leaders also discussed the importance of unity among Muslim countries in the face of growing regional instability. Both agreed to remain in close contact and continue consultations on the evolving situation.
The conversation between the two leaders underscores Pakistan’s deepening diplomatic engagement amid one of the most dangerous regional escalations in recent years, as global powers urge restraint to avoid a broader conflict.
