New York, July 1, 2025: In a significant diplomatic development, Pakistan has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for July 2025, marking an important milestone in its ongoing eighth term (2025–26) as a non-permanent member.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the development in a post on X, stating that Pakistan takes on the role “with humility, conviction, and a profound commitment to the UN Charter, international law, and multilateralism.” He underscored the urgency of the moment, noting that Pakistan’s presidency comes amid “escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises across the world.”
Pakistan was recently also appointed vice-chair of the UNSC’s Counter-Terrorism Committee, responsible for monitoring the implementation of Resolution 1373 (2001) concerning global counter-terror efforts.
The UNSC comprises 15 members — five permanent (China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US) and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms based on regional representation. As the UN’s most powerful body, the Council holds authority to make binding decisions, impose sanctions, and authorize the use of force to maintain international peace and security.
In another diplomatic achievement, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Kamran Akhtar, has been elected President of the 53rd session of the Industrial Development Board (UNIDO) — a first for Pakistan. The UNIDO Director General congratulated Ambassador Akhtar and praised Pakistan’s contributions to the organization.
According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan has one of the largest active portfolios with UNIDO, involving projects worth over €350 million. These initiatives span critical sectors such as textiles, leather, fisheries, food safety, climate action, and renewable energy. Flagship programs like PAIDAR and PAFAID have significantly contributed to poverty alleviation, employment generation, and sustainable rural development.
