Buner, September 2, 2025: Relentless heavy rains have triggered devastating floods in Buner, submerging low-lying areas, destroying crops, and forcing large-scale evacuations. Rivers and canals overflowed after hours of torrential downpour, turning the district into a disaster zone.
Announcements from mosques urged residents to move to higher ground, but floodwaters still inundated dozens of homes and swept into Pir Baba Bazaar, creating scenes of chaos and panic. Families fled in haste, carrying only what they could save.
Deputy Commissioner Kashif Qayyum confirmed that a high alert has been declared across Buner. Rescue teams have been deployed to the most vulnerable areas, and designated shelters are being prepared for displaced families.
“The water level in Batai and Qadr Nagar has reached a dangerous point, flowing rapidly toward Pir Baba Khoor. Floodwater has already reached behind the main market and road level. Evacuations are in progress,” the deputy commissioner said. He added that if conditions worsen, temporary housing would be arranged for families unable to return home.
The floods have severely damaged infrastructure, washing away communication roads and cutting off access to several areas. Farmers suffered massive losses as orchards and standing crops were destroyed, threatening long-term economic impacts on the region’s agricultural communities.
Residents described terrifying scenes as the flash floods intensified after more than five hours of continuous rain. “We felt helpless as water kept rising. We just ran to save our children,” said one villager while moving to higher ground.
Officials said relief operations are underway, but admitted the scale of the disaster demands urgent and coordinated action from both provincial and federal authorities.
The floods in Buner have left behind not only immediate devastation but also fears of a prolonged crisis, with families displaced, livelihoods destroyed, and communities struggling to recover.
