Dubai, September 13, 2025: Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has offered a hard-hitting analysis ahead of Sunday’s much-anticipated India-Pakistan Asia Cup showdown in Dubai, stressing the need for clear strategy, mental strength, and flawless execution.
Speaking to a local sports platform, Akhtar warned that Pakistan must brace for India’s aggressive approach.
“It’s pretty obvious — they are going to dominate you and hammer you down. If I stretch it further, India would prefer to play Afghanistan in the finals, not Pakistan,” he said. “But the point is, Pakistan has to put their A-game forward. If the goal is to beat India, then winning becomes a big discussion we have to have.”
Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq struck a more optimistic tone, noting that Pakistan’s chances hinge on a strong start.
“If they don’t lose early wickets and maintain momentum — even without Virat Kohli, whose style our bowlers rarely face — Pakistan can create pressure. The key is to get a good start,” he said.
Akhtar, however, cautioned against complacency. “This is not a team where two early wickets will create cracks. Abhishek is strong, and this is one of the best middle orders India has ever produced,” he explained.
The 50-year-old advised Pakistan to stick to basics: bat first, aim for a score near 200, and field a balanced XI. “Don’t overcomplicate bowling. Use three pacers, two spinners, and one all-rounder. Faheem Ashraf deserves a place for his hitting ability. Hasan Ali with the new ball, or Wasim Jr. and Haris Rauf, can take on the challenge,” he suggested.
Both sides enter the clash on the back of emphatic wins — India dismissing UAE for 57 before chasing in 4.3 overs, and Pakistan posting 160-7 before bowling Oman out for 67.
India holds the historical edge, winning 10 of their 13 T20Is against Pakistan, including their most recent six-wicket victory in February’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
