Islamabad, February 4, 2026: Thailand’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Rongvudhi Virabutr, has said that Pakistan and Thailand are deeply connected through a shared cultural heritage—particularly the ancient Gandhara civilization—describing cultural diplomacy as “the soul” of bilateral relations.

Speaking in an interview on cultural diplomacy with Pakistan, the ambassador emphasized that while trade figures remain important, it is the bonds of friendship, mutual respect, and shared history that truly sustain the partnership between the two countries.

“Thailand and Pakistan are connected by a shared cultural heritage, the ancient Gandhara civilization, and this historical link provides a unique and powerful foundation for our modern relationship,” he said. The ambassador added that this connection also presents a valuable opportunity to welcome more Thai tourists eager to witness the majestic civilization firsthand.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen ties, the envoy noted that both countries are actively using cultural diplomacy to bring their people closer. A prime example, he said, is the recent presentation of a replica of the Fasting Buddha to Thailand, which has opened a new chapter of friendship and understanding.

“We are also preparing a major Gandhara Exhibition in Bangkok for the 75th anniversary of our diplomatic ties next year,” the ambassador told Monthly Peace. “These initiatives are designed to foster tourism, promote educational exchanges, and strengthen the people-to-people connections that are essential for long-term bilateral success.”

Responding to a question about cooperation in science, technology, health, and climate resilience, Ambassador Virabutr said the future of both nations is intertwined with collaboration in cutting-edge fields.

“We are committed to fostering a new era of collaboration in science, technology, and health. The recent strategic partnership between the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) and the Central Islamic Council of Thailand is a testament to this commitment,” he said.

The collaboration is expected to lead to concrete initiatives, including scholarships for Pakistani students in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and big data, as well as the establishment of a regional halal science center in Thailand. “These projects will not only empower our communities but will also contribute to global efforts in health and climate resilience,” he added.

The ambassador further noted that Thailand is advancing health diplomacy by sharing expertise and best practices on universal health coverage and primary healthcare with Pakistan, based on the globally recognized Thai model.

Reflecting on decades of bilateral ties, Ambassador Virabutr described the relationship as a journey marked by consistent and evolving friendship, mutual respect, and shared principles.

“Our relationship began with the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1951 and has since grown into a robust, multifaceted partnership. Over the decades, we have seen cooperation flourish across political, economic, and cultural spheres,” he said, adding that navigating global challenges together has strengthened both nations’ resolve to work even more closely in the future.

Discussing key achievements in Pakistan-Thailand relations, the ambassador said the most significant milestones are those that have built bridges of understanding between the two peoples.

“I would highlight the deepening of cultural and educational ties, particularly through our shared Gandhara heritage. The presentation of the Fasting Buddha replica and the upcoming Gandhara exhibition are not just symbolic gestures—they are powerful tools for strengthening our bonds and paving the way for a new era of people-to-people connections,” he said.

On the economic front, he pointed to sustained efforts to advance Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, the re-establishment of the Joint Commission, and the revival of the Joint Economic Commission as foundational achievements signaling renewed commitment to economic partnership.

“These are the building blocks upon which we will construct a more prosperous and integrated future,” he added.

Sharing his vision for the next decade, Ambassador Virabutr expressed hope that Pakistan-Thailand relations would evolve into a true strategic partnership.

“I envision a relationship that is not only economically prosperous—with bilateral trade exceeding $2.2 billion—but also deeply integrated on a cultural and social level. I see a future where our peoples travel more freely, our students study at each other’s universities, and our businesses collaborate on innovative projects,” he said.

According to the ambassador, this strategic partnership will be built on four pillars: concrete results in trade and investment, robust business cooperation, deeper people-to-people connections, and effective diplomatic collaboration.

“It is a vision of a future where Thailand and Pakistan are not just friends but trusted partners working together for regional stability, prosperity, and a more vibrant future for all,” the Thai ambassador concluded.
