Islamabad, April 13, 2026: Islamabad commemorated the 65th anniversary of the first human spaceflight with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held on April 12 at the monument of Yuri Gagarin in Fatima Jinnah Park. The event was organized by the Russian Embassy in Pakistan to honor the historic milestone in space exploration.
The ceremony was attended by Albert P. Khorev, Russian Ambassador to Pakistan, Additional Foreign Secretary of Pakistan Ayesha Ali, and ambassadors from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Also present were Russian Defence Attaché Colonel Vadim Fenchenko, Russian Trade Representative Denis Nevzorov, and officials from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and SUPARCO. Members of the Russian community, embassy staff, and representatives from Pakistani academia attended the ceremony.
In his remarks, Ambassador Khorev highlighted the enduring significance of Gagarin’s pioneering journey, stating that it ushered in a new chapter in human history—the era of space exploration. He described the achievement as a powerful symbol of humanity’s determination to advance intellectually and technologically while striving toward ambitious and noble goals.
The Ambassador also noted that the successful launch of the Vostok-1 was made possible by the tireless efforts of millions of Soviet citizens, reflecting a collective commitment by scientists, engineers, and workers across the former Soviet republics.
Speaking on behalf of the Government of Pakistan, Ayesha Ali expressed appreciation to the Russian Embassy for organizing the event and underscored the steady progress in bilateral relations between Islamabad and Moscow.
“Pakistan attaches great importance to its multifaceted relations with Russia,” she said. “Over the years, our two countries have expanded cooperation in diverse fields, including energy, regional connectivity, education, and cultural exchanges. Shared commemorations not only honor historic milestones but also strengthen the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between Pakistan and Russia.”
The Russian Embassy also extended its gratitude to the International Charitable Public Foundation “Dialogue of Cultures – United World” and the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange for donating the bust of Yuri Gagarin and supporting the construction of the monument. The tribute stands as a lasting symbol of international cooperation and humanity’s quest to explore the cosmos.
