Lahore, April 13, 2025: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a severe heatwave alert for the province, warning that temperatures are expected to rise significantly beginning April 13, with the most intense conditions forecast between April 14 and 18.
According to a PDMA press release issued on Saturday, temperatures in south Punjab could surge 6 to 8°C above seasonal averages, while upper Punjab may experience a rise of 4 to 6°C during the same period.
Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert and ensure the implementation of precautionary measures. He urged the public—especially children, the elderly, and women—to avoid unnecessary sun exposure and to stay well-hydrated.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia noted that nighttime temperatures will also remain unusually high, increasing the risk of heat-related health issues. He warned that dusty winds and storms may develop due to extreme heat conditions and advised farmers to take preventive steps to safeguard crops and livestock.
Rescue 1122 teams have been placed on high alert to respond to potential cases of heatstroke and dehydration. The PDMA has ordered the establishment of relief camps in urban centers, equipped with clean drinking water, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and basic first aid facilities. Mobile health teams will also be deployed to manage heat-related emergencies on the ground.
Officials further cautioned that rising temperatures could accelerate snowmelt in the northern regions, potentially impacting river water flows and increasing the risk of downstream flooding.
The public is advised to monitor weather updates and follow safety guidelines as the region braces for this extreme weather event.
