Islamabad, January 15, 2025: Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari, announced a 45% reduction in the electricity tariff for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, cutting rates from Rs. 71 to Rs. 39.70 per unit. This initiative aims to promote EV adoption, reduce fuel imports, and foster a greener environment.

Speaking at a press conference, Leghari highlighted that the government is streamlining processes for establishing EV charging stations, enabling business registration and operation within 15 days. The move is expected to support the transition of motorcycles and rickshaws to electric models, reducing fuel imports and air pollution while lowering travel costs.

The minister noted significant progress in the power sector, including achieving 96% recovery rates and reducing circular debt to zero between July and November 2024. Revised agreements with 18 Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are also being finalized to address billing and connection issues in industrial zones.

Leghari emphasized that this tariff reduction will make EV charging more affordable and accessible, encouraging investments and creating new business opportunities. Permits for charging station operators will be issued within 15 days via an e-portal, simplifying the process and driving sector growth.

The government’s broader energy reforms include renegotiating IPP contracts, which have already saved Rs. 1,100 billion, and tackling line losses and illegal power connections. The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering affordable electricity and fostering a sustainable, cleaner energy future for Pakistan.
